Avantasia is a German supergroup metal opera project founded by Tobias Sammet, the vocalist of Edguy. Known for its symphonic and power metal genres, Avantasia combines elements of rock opera with contributions from various renowned vocalists and musicians. The name "Avantasia" blends "Avalon" and "fantasia," symbolizing "a world beyond human imagination," as described in the debut album's booklet. Initially conceived in 1999 as a studio-only, two-album project, Avantasia has expanded its discography with seven more studio albums and embarked on numerous world tours. The project’s timeline can be divided into four distinct periods:
- 1999–2002: Released a self-titled single and two full-length albums, "The Metal Opera" and "The Metal Opera Part II."
- 2006–2011: Launched the EPs "Lost in Space Part 1 & 2" and "The Wicked Trilogy," which includes the albums "The Scarecrow," "The Wicked Symphony," and "Angel of Babylon."
- 2013–2016: Released the albums "The Mystery of Time" and "Ghostlights."
- 2019–2022: Produced the albums "Moonglow" and "A Paranormal Evening with the Moonflower Society."
Current members of Avantasia include Tobias Sammet, Sascha Paeth, Miro, and Felix Bohnke. The project has been associated with labels such as AFM and Nuclear Blast, and it continues to captivate audiences with its unique blend of metal and theatrical storytelling.
