Richard Melville Hall, known as Moby, was born on September 11, 1965, and is an acclaimed American musician, songwriter, singer, producer, and advocate for animal rights. He is recognized for selling over 20 million records globally. AllMusic highlights his significance in the early '90s dance music scene, attributing to him the expansion of this genre into mainstream audiences in both the United States and the United Kingdom.
Moby began his musical journey at nine, playing guitar and piano, and was part of various punk rock bands during the 1980s before shifting to electronic dance music. By 1989, he had relocated to New York City, where he made a name for himself as a DJ, producer, and remixer. His breakthrough came with the 1991 single "Go," which saw significant success in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and the UK. From 1992 to 1997, he produced multiple top hits on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, including tracks like "Move (You Make Me Feel So Good)" and "Feeling So Real." His work in the '90s included producing under different aliases, releasing the celebrated album Everything Is Wrong in 1995, and delving into film music. His 1996 album, Animal Rights, marked a punk shift that divided his audience.
His fifth album, Play, released in 1999, became a surprising international success in 2000 as its tracks were licensed globally for various media, selling 12 million copies. The album's seventh single, "South Side," featuring Gwen Stefani, became his highest-charting US hit. Following Play, Moby continued producing albums in various music styles, such as 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), and Last Night (2008). His later works focused more on ambient music, including the extensive Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep. in 2016. As of May 2023, he has released twenty-one studio albums, the latest being Resound NYC.
Beyond music, Moby is a fervent advocate for veganism, animal rights, and humanitarian causes. He has owned establishments like TeaNY in Manhattan and Little Pine in Los Angeles and founded the vegan Circle V festival. Moby has also authored four books, encompassing a photography collection and two memoirs, Porcelain: A Memoir (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019).
