Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, better known by his stage name Nas, is an American rapper deeply embedded in the East Coast hip hop tradition and widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas began his career in the late 1980s with the nickname "Nasty Nas." He made his first appearance on the track "Live at the Barbeque" by Main Source in 1991.

His critically acclaimed debut album, *Illmatic* (1994), is celebrated as one of the finest in hip hop and was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2020. His follow-up, *It Was Written* (1996), topped the Billboard 200 and achieved mainstream success, particularly with the hit "If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)" featuring Lauryn Hill. However, his next albums, *I Am* and *Nastradamus* (both 1999), faced criticism for perceived commercialism.

Nas's feud with Jay-Z, highlighted by his diss track "Ether," brought significant attention from 2001 to 2005. He regained critical acclaim with albums like *Stillmatic* (2001) and *God's Son* (2002). After reconciling with Jay-Z, Nas signed with Def Jam Recordings in 2006 and explored political themes in *Hip Hop Is Dead* (2006) and his untitled 2008 album. His collaboration with Damian Marley, *Distant Relatives* (2010), supported African charities. *Life Is Good* (2012) earned him a Grammy nomination, and he won his first Grammy for *King's Disease* (2020) after several nominations.

Nas has released a total of seventeen studio albums, with notable recent works like *King's Disease II*, *Magic* (2021), and *King's Disease III* (2022), all produced by Hit-Boy. His influence in hip hop is recognized by his rankings on The Source and MTV’s lists and his designation as the "Greatest MC of All Time" by About.com in 2014.

Outside music, Nas is an associate publisher of Mass Appeal magazine and co-founder of the record label Mass Appeal Records, which has signed several prominent artists. He has achieved ten gold, platinum, or multi-platinum certifications in the U.S. for his albums since his debut in 1994.
