Boyz II Men, an American vocal harmony group originating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is renowned for their emotive ballads and a cappella performances. The group, initially a quartet, is now a trio featuring baritone Nathan Morris, and tenors Wanyá Morris and Shawn Stockman. In the 1990s, they included bass singer Michael McCary, who departed in 2003 due to health issues later identified as multiple sclerosis.
The band achieved global fame starting in 1991, with hits like "Motownphilly" and "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday." Their 1992 single "End of the Road" reached the top of global music charts, setting a record by staying number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for thirteen weeks. This record was subsequently broken by their own songs "I'll Make Love to You" and the Mariah Carey collaboration "One Sweet Day," dominating the number one spot for fourteen and sixteen weeks, respectively. "I'll Make Love to You" also topped Australian charts for four weeks. The group made history when "On Bended Knee" replaced "I'll Make Love to You" at number one, becoming the third artist ever to replace themselves atop the Billboard Hot 100. Their success led to being named Billboard magazine's biggest boy band from 1987 to 2012, and they have won four Grammy Awards.
Currently performing as a trio, Boyz II Men released their latest album "Under the Streetlight" in 2017. The group's journey began at their high school with original members George Baldi, Jon Shoats, and Marguerite Walker, alongside the current lineup. Wanyá Morris joined in 1987, and following the graduation of Baldi, Shoats, and Walker, Shawn Stockman and Michael McCary were recruited. They honed their skills in various local spots and were mentored at their school, CAPA, by LaDeva Davis.
Initially inspired by New Edition's harmonies, they renamed themselves "Boyz II Men," echoing New Edition's track "Boys to Men." Their big break came in 1989 after sneaking into a Power 99 concert at the Philadelphia Civic Center, intending to perform for Will Smith. Instead, they impressed New Edition's Michael Bivins, leading to his mentorship and management. The departure of founding member Marc Nelson led to the formation of the quartet that would gain worldwide recognition: Michael McCary, Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris, and Shawn Stockman.
