Korn emerged as a groundbreaking nu metal band hailing from Bakersfield, California. Established in 1993, the band has been instrumental in developing and popularizing the nu metal genre, achieving mainstream recognition.
The band's origins trace back to 1993, with three former members of L.A.P.D. founding Korn. Its present lineup includes original members James "Munky" Shaffer on guitar, Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu on bass, Brian "Head" Welch providing guitar and backing vocals, and Jonathan Davis as the lead vocalist and bagpipe player. Ray Luzier joined as the drummer in 2007, succeeding original drummer David Silveria.
Korn's journey began with their 1993 demo tape, Neidermayer's Mind, which they distributed for free. Their self-titled debut album was launched in 1994, with their next album, Life Is Peachy, in 1996, marking their commercial breakout. The band achieved significant mainstream success with Follow the Leader (1998) and Issues (1999), both securing the number one spot on the Billboard 200. Their subsequent albums, Untouchables (2002), Take a Look in the Mirror (2003), and See You on the Other Side (2005), continued their success streak.
In 2004, Korn released Greatest Hits Vol. 1, concluding their contract with Immortal Records and Epic Records and marking a decade of hits. Moving to Virgin Records, they released See You on the Other Side (2005) and an untitled album in 2007. Korn III: Remember Who You Are (2010) and The Path of Totality (2011) were released under Roadrunner Records, and The Paradigm Shift (2013) under Prospect Park and Caroline Records. The band returned to Roadrunner Records with The Serenity of Suffering and released The Nothing on September 13, 2019. Their most recent album, Requiem, was unveiled through Loma Vista Recordings on February 4, 2022.
As of 2021, Korn's global record sales exceeded 40 million. They have had twelve top ten peaks on the Billboard 200, with eight reaching the top five. The band boasts multiple RIAA certifications, including seven platinum, two double platinum, one triple platinum, one five times platinum, and two gold records.
Korn's extensive media output includes seven video albums and 50 music videos. They have released 48 singles, with notable tracks like "Blind," "Got the Life," "Freak on a Leash," and "Falling Away from Me," among others. Korn has been recognized with two Grammy Awards from eight nominations and two MTV Video Music Awards from eleven nominations.
