Sir George Ivan Morrison OBE, born on August 31, 1945, is a renowned singer-songwriter and musician from Northern Ireland, with a recording career that extends over seven decades.

Morrison, also affectionately known as "Van the Man" by his admirers, started his musical journey in the late 1950s as a teenager. He played various instruments, including the guitar, harmonica, keyboards, and saxophone, for several Irish showbands, interpreting the era's popular tunes. He gained fame in the mid-1960s as the lead vocalist of the Belfast R&B band Them, contributing to the creation and recording of the iconic track "Gloria." His solo career took off in 1967 with the hit single "Brown Eyed Girl," following the production guidance of Bert Berns.

Following Berns's passing, Warner Bros. Records took over Morrison's contract, leading to the creation of Astral Weeks in 1968. Although it was initially not a commercial success, the album has since been celebrated as a masterpiece. His 1970 album Moondance further cemented his status as a significant figure in music, and he continued to earn critical acclaim through the 1970s with numerous respected albums and live shows.

Morrison's music often merges soul music and rhythm and blues traditions with spiritual, lengthy compositions influenced by Celtic traditions, jazz, and narrative styles, exemplified by albums like Astral Weeks. His unique blend of styles has been termed "Celtic soul," known for achieving an intense, transcendent quality.

His work has been consistently successful in the UK and Ireland, with over 40 albums reaching the UK top 40 and achieving top ten albums across four consecutive decades, most recently with 2021's Latest Record Project, Volume 1. In the United States, he has had eighteen top 40 albums, with twelve between 1997 and 2017. Since turning 70 in 2015, Morrison has been prolific, releasing more than an album per year on average.

Morrison's accolades include two Grammy Awards, the 1994 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, the 2017 Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting, and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was knighted in 2016 for his contributions to the music industry and Northern Irish tourism.
