Formed in 1999, Avenged Sevenfold, often abbreviated as A7X, is a renowned heavy metal group hailing from Huntington Beach, California. The band, featuring M. Shadows as vocalist, Zacky Vengeance on rhythm guitar, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, bass player Johnny Christ, and Brooks Wackerman on drums, has made a significant mark in the music industry.
 
Famed for their eclectic rock melodies and striking visual themes in their album artwork and merchandise, Avenged Sevenfold initially embraced a metalcore style with their debut "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet," continuing this trend in their second album "Waking the Fallen." Their musical evolution became evident in their third album, "City of Evil," where they shifted to a more classic heavy metal approach. This evolution persisted, and they achieved widespread success, even after the tragic loss of their original drummer, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, in 2009. The band persevered, enlisting former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy for their fifth album "Nightmare" in 2010, which soared to number one on the Billboard 200.
 
In 2011, Avenged Sevenfold welcomed drummer Arin Ilejay, who contributed to their sixth album "Hail to the King" (2013), a hard rock and heavy metal homage to their musical influences. This album also topped the Billboard 200 and several international charts. Ilejay departed in late 2014 and was succeeded by ex-Bad Religion drummer Brooks Wackerman, though this change wasn't publicized until 2015. Their surprise-release of the seventh studio album "The Stage" in 2016, a progressive metal and conceptual piece, landed at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart. Their eighth and highly experimental album, "Life Is But a Dream...", was unveiled in June 2023.
 
Avenged Sevenfold's discography includes seven studio albums, a live album/DVD, two compilation albums, and eighteen singles, boasting over 8 million global sales. They've received multiple certification accolades, including five platinum albums in the United States. Their contribution to the Call of Duty: Black Ops series has been notable, culminating in the 2018 EP "Black Reign." The band's influence and success in metal music earned them the 47th spot on Loudwire's Top 50 Metal Bands of All Time.
